Enjoyed the listen. Of particular interest to me…for a short while after he entered the USA 1949/1950 and before he worked at Zabar’s , Sam Cohen had rented a stand in a store selling smoked fish. It did not succeed . I do not know the particulars but this podcast talked of that methodology as the beginning of Zabar’s (albeit in the 1930’s) , the workplace he loved. Harris L. Cohen, MD (a far less dangerous Son of Sam)

2023. Man you can’t even get corn beef in the grocery store delis anymore. The cost is so high and a pain to maintain. Inflation changed everything. I would definitely pay a high price to get some on my sandwich. I eat beef pastrami on my sandwich. Hopefully it levels out and we can have corned beef again soon.

I enjoyed these podcasts tremendously. As someone who has both does business with the store, shops there and gets regular delivery of their coffee for more than 35 years it is fascinating to hear the history. I hope there is more to come and perhaps with some video.

My mother discovered Zabar's when she first arrived from Pennsylvania in 1936. She got a job by Central Park West. Her time spent in this neighborhood obviously was spent seeing what the neighborhood had to offer and what she could purchase. As a child of the '50s , I got to visit Zabar's with my mom. I remember all the cooking equipment hanging from the ceiling. The store was narrow and located next to a pharmacy which was on the corner. My mom told me that the store was pretty much the same as it was in 1936. Later on the unthinkable happened. The drug store disappeared, and Zabar's expanded. Some time after that the store on the other side close, and Zabar's expanded once again. On t.v. one time I saw a short show on the neighborhood and I believe that above the store (if I remember correctly) there was a dance studio. I think that it was connected to the Thomas family. Richard Thomas, who played John Boy on the "Waltons", one day came strolling past us with his first wife and the kids. This included twin girls and a son. When we moved to Queens we never left the UWS because my father worked in a hotel on 150 Riverside Drive. I am so, so glad that this store has remained - only to become bigger and better. Many family-owned stores have bitten the dust. Yet, Zabar's still stands and thrives. Congratulations, and "ad multos anos" -- Many more years! -- Christine Domingue

Ah 2009 prices. A subway sandwich costs about $8 now depending on the ingredients, and they're total garbage. Also, there's way too many poisonous comments here for a short video about a sandwich. Bleah.

Great selection. Although Västerbotten is considered somewhat of a weekend treat here in Sweden, you might use it in a dish such as a pie, lasagna or a gratin when you put that little extra into a dinner. Most people in Sweden who want something similar for everyday consumption would go for a slight aged Prästost (priest's cheese).

All these people saying things like, "I can make this for less" need to shake your heads. Of course you can. You eat out so you DON'T HAVE TO! You buy a $30 steak at a nice restaurant - you could buy at the store for $7. You're paying to have them grill it - to wait on you - to do the dishes. If they only charged the cost of the ingredients - how could they pay the light bill and the wages of the workers!??
